Professor Józef Gawlik graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Cracow University of Technology in 1972.  Since then he has been employed at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Cracow University of Technology in the Institute of Machines Technology and Production Automation. He has been the chairman of the Committee on Machine Building of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2007. He has been the member of the Executive Committee on Production Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2012. He has also been the member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles since 2012.

He was the Vice-Chancellor of Cracow University of Technology in the years 1999-2005. After that he was the Chancellor of Cracow University of Technology in the years 2005-2008.

Professor Józef Gawlik has been the member of editorial boards and programme boards of the following papers:

Advances in Manufacturing Science and Technology, Management and Production Engineering Review, Mechanik, Technical Transactions, Technologia Montażu i Automatyzacji, Zarządzanie Produkcją.

For many years he has cooperated with national and international organisations and institutions:

  • He was the co-initiator and co-organizer of the International Foundation for World Class Manufacturing. Among members of this Foundation there are Polish companies, e.g. Zelmer-Rzeszów, AFM-Andrychów, OBR Redor from Bielsko-Biała, IOS-Kraków, as well as foreign companies, e.g. Leitz Meßtechnik, Zeiss-Oberkochen, Hessisches Zentrum für Qualitätssicherung, Volkswagen A.G., Polish, German and British Universities cooperating in JEP 07685 project;
  • He was the initiator and co-founder of ‘Małopolskie Centrum Transferu Technologii’ (Małopolska Province Centre of Technology Transfer) at Cracow University of Technology. Among members of this Centre there are, e.g. Tadeusz Sedzimir Steelworks in Krakow, IOS-Cracow, Małopolska Provincial Office in Krakow.
  • He has been the coordinator of the cooperation of the Institute of Machines Technology and Production Automation of Cracow University of Technology with: the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, University of Miskolc (1997-1999),Technische Hochschule Karl Marx Stadt, Technische Universität Chemnitz, Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena (1978 -1990), Institute of Superhard Materials of National Academy of Science of Ukraine in Kiev (2005 – 2012);
  •  He was the initiator of the contract of the scientific and research cooperation between Cracow University of Technology and Kharkiv University of Technology;
  • He has been the member of national and international conference committees in Austria, Croatia, Romania, Ukraine, Russia and Hungary;
  • He was the initiator of the accession of the Institute of Machines Technology and Production Automation to the international society NC Geselschaft ‘Anwendung Neuer Technologien’ in Ulm;
  • He was the chairman of the organization committee of 12 international science conferences, among other things,  congress DAAAM(Danube Adria Association for Automation and Manufacturing) in 1995, the conference entitled  ‘Industrial Property in Technology Transfer’  and ‘Industrial property and technology transfer in small and medium-sized companies’ with the participation of experts from the EU;
  • He was the Vice-President of the organisation committee of the conference General Assembly CIRP – Krakow 2004;
