2021 no 3:  Migration and Cities

Guest editors: Anna Fiń (Pedagogical University in Cracow, Poland) and Aneta Kostrzewa (York College, City University of New York, USA)

The history of migration processes is basically an interrelation of the histories of  urbanization, industrialization and globalization. Since the times of the first mass migrations in the second part of the nineteenth century, immigrants headed for large industrial cities to find work, form communities and forge new ways of life. In the twenty first century, the urban orientation and preference for urban settlement among different types of migrants is still apparent. As a consequence of immigrant inflow the cities around the world undergo profound transformation. The key aspect of this transformation is growing diversity both in terms of ethno-racial structure and the socio-spatial dimension. Many urban scholars argue that increasing diversity is a fundamental characteristic that will help cities thrive in the era of global interdependence.  Yet, diversity also poses a set of new challenges such as social inequality, discrimination, marginalization and exclusion. The way government agencies at all levels respond to these challenges will determine the future of urban centers as reception points of immigrants and as  incubators of inclusionary thinking and progressive social policy––notions that have come under attack in the current political mood. The goal of this issue of Migration Studies is to show the peculiarity of a city as an environment for the lives of immigrants along with the analysis of various consequences of this phenomenon:social, cultural, economic, and political. We assume that immigrants are active social actors on the urban stage, and as such they co-create and co-define contemporary urban life and culture. We welcome sociological, cultural, anthropological economic and political, as well as interdisciplinary perspectives on the issue. The following themes/topics prove to be particularly interesting:

a) Immigration and the phenomena occurring in the urban space e.g. social inequalities, poverty, urban processes, transformations of the specific districts, social movements, cultural life, etc

b) The role of migrants in the transformation of urban space and revitalization of the cities themselves, including the visual aspects of the transformation of urban landscape

c) The role of ethnic businesses and immigrant entrepreneurship in urban economy

d) Functioning of immigrants as an urban community including the role of an ethnic neighborhood as well as the analysis of the processes of changes of an ethnic neighborhood

e)Immigrants as a part of the local/urban collective memory.

f) Policies and programs that support fledgling immigrant and minority communities and/or respond to their distinct needs and experiences as they integrate into a new society

g) Ethnic politics and collective mobilization in urban space and its organizational manifestations

h) Different aspects of presence, behaviors and activities of members of immigrant groups in urban space

i) The situation of migrants in the era of urban health crisis and epidemiological threats

j) Theoretical and methodological approaches to the analyzed phenomenon
